
Ammonia Control in Poultry Houses: Litter, Ventilation and Additives
Ammonia is the single most common welfare and performance failure in commercial poultry. Above 20 ppm birds show respiratory damage, footpad burns, and FCR loss. Above 40 ppm mortality accelerates. This guide covers what actually works.

Where ammonia comes from
Ammonia comes from uric acid in droppings, converted by urease enzyme (from bacteria) in wet litter. Dry litter (< 25% moisture) produces very little ammonia. Wet litter (> 35% moisture) is a chemical factory. Control moisture, and 60% of the ammonia problem disappears.
Ventilation strategy
Ventilation exhausts ammonia already formed. Minimum ventilation must remove moisture faster than it accumulates — 1.0–1.4 m³/h per kg live bird is standard. Cold-weather over-restriction (to save heating cost) is the number-one operator failure that produces ammonia crises.
Litter acidifiers and additives
Aluminum sulphate (alum), sodium bisulphate and proprietary acidifiers reduce litter pH to 5–6, inhibiting urease and cutting ammonia release 50–80% for the first 2–3 weeks of the flock. Cost $200–500 per 1,000 m² floor area, paid back in feed conversion and mortality reduction on almost every winter flock.
Welfare thresholds and regulation
EU broiler welfare directive 2007/43 requires monitoring, target < 20 ppm NH₃. US NCC guidelines: < 25 ppm. Above 40 ppm most integrator programs count against the farm. Non-compliance can suspend supplier status with integrators and retailers.
Biofilters and scrubbers
Wet scrubbers and biofilters remove ammonia from exhaust air, protecting local environment. Required in some jurisdictions (Netherlands, Denmark). CAPEX $8–20/m² house floor. Rare outside strict-emissions regions but growing.
