
Minimum Ventilation in Cold Weather: Air Quality Without Chilling the Birds
Cold-weather ventilation is where inexperienced operators lose the flock. Under-ventilate to save heating cost and CO₂, NH₃ and moisture build up; over-ventilate and heating cost explodes. This guide covers commercial minimum-ventilation practice.

The minimum-ventilation duty
Minimum ventilation exists to remove moisture and gases, not to cool. Target: keep CO₂ under 3,000 ppm, ammonia under 20 ppm, relative humidity 50–70%. Air movement is minimal — a few timer fans running on a duty cycle, drawing air through pressure-controlled inlets.
Sizing minimum airflow
Rule of thumb: 0.10 m³/h per kg of live bird for CO₂ control, 1.0–1.4 m³/h per kg for moisture control (moisture is usually the constraint in cold weather). For 35,000 broilers at 2.4 kg = 84 t live weight, moisture control needs ~110,000 m³/h minimum. Two 91 cm timer fans on 20% duty cycle can deliver this.
Inlet placement and management
Wall inlets high on the side wall throw incoming cold air along the ceiling — it mixes with warm room air before descending to bird level. Static pressure must be 20–30 Pa to throw air the full width. Under-pressurised inlets = cold air drops directly onto birds = chilling and flock loss.
Heating integration
Cold-weather ventilation must be co-designed with heating. Radiant brooders warm birds directly; forced-air heaters warm room air. Both need CO₂-safe combustion (direct-fired heaters add ~2,000 ppm CO₂ per hour of operation — must be balanced by ventilation).
Litter management is 50% of the job
Wet litter = ammonia + coccidiosis + footpad lesions. Ventilation removes moisture only if litter releases it: keep drinker lines correctly pressurised, till or turn litter as needed, and monitor litter moisture (target 20–30%).
