The core hatchery equipment stack
A commercial hatchery is a chain of interdependent systems: egg reception and cool storage, setters, hatchers, chick processing (candling, sexing, vaccination, counting, boxing), chick holding, waste handling and truck loading. HVAC (heating, cooling, humidification, filtration) and biosecurity envelope tie the whole plant together — a hatchery is really a controlled-environment building with machines inside, not a shed with equipment.
Single-stage vs multi-stage — the decisive procurement question
Single-stage machines run one flock per chamber and allow bespoke temperature/humidity/CO₂ profiles per breed and flock age; multi-stage machines share air across mixed-age eggs and are cheaper per placement but limit control. Commercial buyers targeting premium chick quality and modern breeder guidance almost always choose single-stage; cost-driven markets may accept multi-stage. Fix this before RFQ — it drives room layout, HVAC sizing, floor loading and capital budget.
Chick quality KPIs the RFQ must include
Serious hatchery RFQs specify measurable outcomes: hatch of fertile (%), dead-in-shell rate, chick uniformity (Pasgar / Tona score), navel score, yolk sac reserve, and 7-day broiler mortality. Ask suppliers for reference-site data at your target breed and altitude — not brochure numbers. Guaranteed performance clauses tied to these KPIs are enforceable if written into the contract.
HVAC, biosecurity and building envelope
Hatchery HVAC handles heat load from thousands of setters plus latent load from humidification. Air changes are typically 8–15 ACH in incubation rooms with HEPA or F9 filtration on incoming air. Biosecurity requires unidirectional flow — clean-to-dirty — with shower-in/shower-out, dedicated PPE and separate egg and chick truck routes. Retrofitting these into an existing building is often more expensive than building purpose-built.
Utilities and redundancy
A 100,000-eggs/week hatchery typically needs 250–500 kVA of installed power, 100% backup generator coverage (a 6-hour outage during hatching can wipe out an entire hatch), water treatment, standby humidification steam and dual chillers. These utility items often account for 25–35% of hatchery CAPEX — budget them explicitly.
