Feather sexing: the layer default
In feather-sex-linked breeds (most commercial layers), day-old chicks are sexed by wing-feather length. Trained sexers achieve 98–99% accuracy at 900–1,200 chicks/hour. Cheapest and fastest method; requires the breed to be feather-sex-linked (Lohmann Brown, ISA Brown, Hy-Line Brown all are).
Vent sexing: the broiler-breeder standard
Vent inspection under magnification distinguishes male and female cloacal papillae. 97–99% accuracy in expert hands, 400–700 chicks/hour. Used where breed genetics do not permit feather sexing. Trained sexers are scarce and expensive — plan multi-year training.
Machine-vision and spectroscopy sexing
Automated systems using ML vision or hyperspectral imaging are commercial in select markets. Accuracy 96–99%, throughput 5,000–20,000/hour. CAPEX $500k–2M per line. Justified above ~50M chicks/year with expensive human sexers.
In-ovo sex determination — the frontier
Several technologies detect sex on day 9–14 by extracting a droplet of allantoic fluid (hormone-based) or by hyperspectral shell imaging. Commercially deployed in EU where male-chick culling in layer hatcheries is regulated (Germany, France since 2022). Cost $0.03–0.08 per egg added to hatchery OPEX. Market economics work where regulation forces the change or premium retailers pay for cull-free eggs.
