Feed mill planning tool
Feed Price Change Impact Calculator
See what a change in feed price per tonne means for your operation: annual feed tonnage, added or saved cost per year and per animal, from your own herd, intake and price inputs.
What does a feed price increase per tonne mean for my operation?
Multiply your annual feed tonnage by the price change per tonne. Annual tonnage is animals × daily intake (kg) × feeding days ÷ 1,000. For example, 500,000 birds eating 0.11 kg a day for 365 days use about 20,075 tonnes a year, so a 25 USD/t increase adds about USD 502,000 a year — about USD 1.00 per bird. The inputs are illustrative; use your own.

What this tool calculates
- Converts herd or flock size and daily intake into annual feed tonnage.
- Shows the annual cost change and the change per animal for a given price move.
- Expresses the change as a share of your annual feed spend.
What it cannot do
- It holds no market prices or forecasts.
- It does not model changes in intake, FCR or formulation that may follow a price move.
Who this is for
- Commercial poultry, pig, dairy, beef and aquaculture operations
- Procurement and finance teams budgeting feed contracts
Input definitions
- Animals (average standing)
- Entered by you. Default used for the worked example: 500000.
- Feed intake per animal (kg/day)
- Entered by you. Default used for the worked example: 0.11 kg/day.
- Feeding days in period (days)
- Entered by you. Default used for the worked example: 365 days.
- Current feed price (USD/t)
- Your own price — example value.
- Price change (USD/t)
- Negative for a decrease.
Methodology
Annual tonnes = animals × intake (kg/day) × days ÷ 1,000. Annual change = annual tonnes × price change per tonne. Per animal = annual change ÷ animals. Share = annual change ÷ (annual tonnes × current price).
Assumptions
- Intake is an average across the year or cycle.
- Animal count is the average standing population fed during the period.
Worked example — illustrative inputs
Inputs
- 500,000 birds, 0.11 kg/bird/day, 365 days
- Current price 400 USD/t, change +25 USD/t
Outputs
- About 20,075 t/year
- About USD 501,875 more per year
- About USD 1.00 per bird; 6.3% of feed spend
How to read it. Small per-tonne moves become large annual sums at industrial scale, which is why contract timing and pricing terms matter.

All figures are indicative planning estimates for budgeting and supplier discussion. They are not quotations, guarantees or professional engineering, nutritional, legal or financial advice. Have results reviewed by the responsible professionals before you commit capital.
