Animal feed ingredients: the complete overview

Feed ingredients fall into six functional groups: energy sources, protein meals, fats and oils, minerals, vitamins and functional additives. Selecting the right blend depends on species, production stage, local availability and price volatility — not on brand loyalty.

Energy sources

Cereal grains (corn, wheat, barley, sorghum) supply 60–70% of most rations. Selection depends on starch digestibility, mycotoxin risk in the origin and landed cost per Mcal of metabolizable energy — not per tonne.

Protein meals

Soybean meal is the global benchmark; rapeseed, sunflower, cottonseed and DDGS are viable alternates when priced correctly against digestible amino acids, not crude protein.

Fats and oils

Vegetable oils, animal fats and blended acid oils add energy density and pellet lubricity. Peroxide value, free fatty acid and unsaponifiables must be specified in every purchase.

Minerals, vitamins and additives

Macro and trace minerals, vitamin premixes, enzymes, probiotics, acidifiers and mycotoxin binders complete the ration. These are low-tonnage, high-impact ingredients where quality certification matters most.

How to compare offers

Standardize every quote to digestible amino acid, metabolizable energy and delivered cost per functional unit. FeedMatch RFQs enforce this normalization automatically.

FAQ

Common questions

How many ingredients does a typical ration use?
Commercial rations use 8–15 ingredients. Fewer than 6 signals under-formulation; more than 20 signals inefficient sourcing.
Should I buy on price per tonne?
No. Buy on price per unit of digestible nutrient delivered — the only metric that reflects true feeding cost.
