How much profit does a 1,000-chicken broiler batch make?
Take the birds placed, subtract mortality to get birds sold, multiply by live weight and sale price per kg for revenue. Then cost the batch: chicks, feed (birds sold × live weight × FCR × feed price, plus feed eaten by birds that died), plus medication, brooding energy, litter, labour and overhead. Profit is revenue minus that total, and the two figures that move it most are feed conversion ratio and feed price — feed is normally 60–70% of a broiler batch cost. Methodology
Birds sold = birds placed × (1 − mortality%). Live weight sold = birds sold × live weight. Revenue = live weight sold × sale price/kg. Feed for sold birds = live weight sold × FCR. Feed lost to mortality is approximated as birds died × live weight × FCR × 0.5 (deaths spread across the cycle). Feed cost = total feed tonnage × feed price/t. Chick cost = birds placed × chick price. Other cost = birds placed × other cost per bird. Profit = revenue − (chicks + feed + other). Break-even price = total cost ÷ live weight sold.
Assumptions
- Mortality is spread evenly through the cycle, so dead birds are charged roughly half a full bird's feed.
- One average live weight and one average FCR apply to the whole flock.
- Feed price is the delivered price per tonne of finished feed, not ex-works.
- Medication, brooding fuel, litter, labour, electricity and overhead are entered as one per-bird figure.
- Housing capital and land are excluded; this is a batch operating model.

How to read it. At these inputs the batch is thin: a 10-cent fall in live price or a 0.1 rise in FCR erases it. That is the normal reality of small broiler batches, and it is why feed price per tonne and feed conversion are the two variables worth negotiating hardest.
Limitations
- FCR and mortality dominate the result — a 0.1 change in FCR usually moves margin more than a small feed discount.
- Local sale prices for live birds move seasonally; run a low, mid and high price scenario rather than one number.
- Output is indicative planning arithmetic for discussion with suppliers and lenders, not an audited budget.
