5 TPH feed mill: what the capacity really means before you request quotes
A 5 TPH feed mill is a plant whose pelleting line is rated at 5 tonnes per hour under one declared reference condition — a specific recipe, pellet diameter, moisture and conditioning setup. Real average output is normally lower than the nameplate figure once recipe changes, small-diameter pellets, cleaning, batching gaps and downtime are included, so plan on an effective utilisation factor rather than the rated number. At 12,000–30,000 tonnes per year depending on shifts and uptime, this size typically suits single-site producers, regional commercial mills and integrators building their first in-house feed plant. Every quotation you request must state capacity against the same recipe, the same pellet diameter and the same operating hours, or the proposals cannot be compared.
Capacity is the single most misread number in feed mill procurement. Suppliers quote a nominal rate under favourable conditions; buyers plan production against an average. A rated capacity is valid only against the conditions it was measured under. Change any one of these and the real rate moves:
Plan the plant on effective tonnes per operating hour, not the nameplate rate, and record that assumption in the RFQ so suppliers answer against your basis.
- Recipe: high-fibre, high-fat or high-inclusion-by-product formulas pellet slower than a standard maize-soya broiler ration
- Pellet diameter: small diameter (2–3 mm) pellets reduce throughput sharply against 4–6 mm
- Conditioning: steam quality, retention time and target conditioning temperature all shift the achievable rate
- Grinding fineness: a finer grind ahead of the press moves the bottleneck upstream to the hammer mill
- Cooling and drying: the cooler, not the press, sets the sustainable rate in hot and humid climates
- Changeovers, flushing, batching gaps, cleaning and planned maintenance
Annual tonnage at 5 TPH
Annual output depends on shifts and uptime far more than on the rated figure. Use the same basis for every proposal:
- One shift, moderate uptime: around 12,000 tonnes per year
- Extended shifts and higher uptime: up to about 30,000 tonnes per year
- State planned operating hours per day, days per week and weeks per year in the RFQ
- Reserve headroom for growth, seasonal peaks and future product ranges before fixing the capacity
Process line scope at this size
A 5 TPH line is usually a compact tower or semi-tower layout: intake and cleaning, a single hammer mill, one batch mixer, a pellet press with conditioner, a counterflow cooler, crumbler where crumbles are produced, screening and bagging or bulk load-out. Liquid addition is often limited to a mixer-stage fat line. Automation is typically batch control with manual micro-ingredient addition unless medicated feeds require otherwise.
Raw material and finished feed storage
Raw material storage at this size is frequently a mix of flat storage and a small silo battery. Decide days of cover per key ingredient before layout: maize and soya cover drives most of the civil cost. Finished feed storage should reflect delivery frequency and the number of simultaneous products held.
Utilities and connected load
Connected load is modest relative to larger plants but grid stability matters more than headline capacity. Confirm supply reliability, backup generation and steam source early — an unreliable supply invalidates the whole design and is a common cause of underperformance after commissioning.
Staffing and operating model
Commonly a small operating team per shift with combined roles across intake, production and dispatch. Quality control is usually a basic on-site laboratory plus external analysis, and maintenance is largely in-house with supplier support for the press.
Budget framing
Budget framing at this size is dominated by scope, not by the press. Civil works, steel, storage, electrical supply, installation and commissioning routinely exceed the process equipment package. Ask each supplier to price the same scope boundary so the comparison is meaningful.
