20 TPH feed mill: what the capacity really means before you request quotes

Short answer

A 20 TPH feed mill is a plant whose pelleting line is rated at 20 tonnes per hour under one declared reference condition — a specific recipe, pellet diameter, moisture and conditioning setup. Real average output is normally lower than the nameplate figure once recipe changes, small-diameter pellets, cleaning, batching gaps and downtime are included, so plan on an effective utilisation factor rather than the rated number. At 50,000–120,000 tonnes per year depending on shifts and uptime, this size typically suits multi-species integrators, established commercial feed producers and groups supplying multiple sites. Every quotation you request must state capacity against the same recipe, the same pellet diameter and the same operating hours, or the proposals cannot be compared.

Capacity is the single most misread number in feed mill procurement. Suppliers quote a nominal rate under favourable conditions; buyers plan production against an average. A rated capacity is valid only against the conditions it was measured under. Change any one of these and the real rate moves:

Plan the plant on effective tonnes per operating hour, not the nameplate rate, and record that assumption in the RFQ so suppliers answer against your basis.

  • Recipe: high-fibre, high-fat or high-inclusion-by-product formulas pellet slower than a standard maize-soya broiler ration
  • Pellet diameter: small diameter (2–3 mm) pellets reduce throughput sharply against 4–6 mm
  • Conditioning: steam quality, retention time and target conditioning temperature all shift the achievable rate
  • Grinding fineness: a finer grind ahead of the press moves the bottleneck upstream to the hammer mill
  • Cooling and drying: the cooler, not the press, sets the sustainable rate in hot and humid climates
  • Changeovers, flushing, batching gaps, cleaning and planned maintenance

Annual tonnage at 20 TPH

Annual output depends on shifts and uptime far more than on the rated figure. Use the same basis for every proposal:

  • One shift, moderate uptime: around 50,000 tonnes per year
  • Extended shifts and higher uptime: up to about 120,000 tonnes per year
  • State planned operating hours per day, days per week and weeks per year in the RFQ
  • Reserve headroom for growth, seasonal peaks and future product ranges before fixing the capacity

Process line scope at this size

At 20 TPH the line is usually engineered around parallel capacity in critical stages: multiple hammer mills or a larger grinding line, a high-capacity mixer with short cycle times, one or two pellet presses, a large counterflow cooler and dedicated post-pelleting handling. Redundancy decisions — a second press versus a single larger one — should be made before quotation, because they change the entire proposal.

Raw material and finished feed storage

Ingredient intake rate becomes a design constraint of its own: the plant must be able to receive raw materials faster than it consumes them. Specify truck and, where relevant, rail or vessel intake rates, plus days of cover for each major ingredient.

Utilities and connected load

Connected load, boiler sizing and specific energy consumption per tonne all become material cost drivers. Require suppliers to state expected kWh per tonne for grinding and pelleting at your reference recipe, since it directly affects operating cost over the plant life.

Staffing and operating model

Typically a full shift organisation with separate production, quality, maintenance and logistics functions, plus a formal preventive maintenance programme and a defined critical spares list.

Budget framing

Interface risk between process, civil, structural and electrical packages becomes a real cost at this scale. Decide the delivery model — manufacturer-led, EPC-led or multi-supplier with your own coordination — before requesting quotations.

Questions buyers ask

How many tonnes per year can a 20 TPH feed mill produce?
Roughly 50,000 tonnes per year on a single shift with moderate uptime, rising to about 120,000 tonnes with extended shifts and high availability. The rated hourly figure alone tells you nothing about annual output; shifts, changeovers, recipe mix and downtime dominate the result.
Is 20 TPH the right size for my operation?
Size the plant from your own demand, not from a supplier's standard model. Take your peak monthly tonnage, divide by planned operating hours, add a derate for hard recipes and small pellet diameters, then add growth headroom. If the result sits close to 20 TPH, this band is a reasonable starting point for quotation.
Why do two suppliers quote the same capacity at very different prices?
Almost always because the scope differs, not the machines. Storage, intake, steam generation, automation depth, dust control, structural steel, civil works, installation, commissioning and spares are included by some suppliers and excluded by others. Normalise the scope before comparing any prices.
Should I buy extra capacity for future growth?
Some headroom is usually cheaper than a later rebuild, but oversizing raises capital cost, energy use per tonne and part-load inefficiency. A common approach is to size the civil works, storage layout and building for a future step, while ordering the process line for current demand plus a defined margin.
