What a usable certificate contains
Producer and site identification, the exact lot or batch reference, production date, sampling date and plan, each parameter with its analytical method and result, the laboratory that performed the work, and an authorised signature. Anything missing narrows what the document can support in a dispute.
Typical values are not results
Documents headed 'typical analysis' describe a product family, not the cargo in front of you. They are useful for formulation planning and useless for acceptance decisions and claims.
Tie the certificate to the delivered lot
The lot number on the certificate must match the marks on the delivered cargo or the bulk parcel identification. Without traceable linkage, the certificate cannot be attributed to what arrived.
Was zu prüfen ist
- —Lot-specific reference matching the delivered cargo
- —Analytical method named per parameter
- —Sampling date and sampling plan
- —Laboratory identity and accreditation scope
- —Authorised signature and issuing entity
Typische Risiken
- —Accepting a family-level document as lot evidence
- —Certificates issued long before the shipment date
- —Parameters certified by methods that do not match the contract
Häufige Fehler
- —Filing certificates without checking them against the contract specification
- —Not retaining certificates with the corresponding retained sample
Häufige Fragen
Is a supplier's in-house laboratory acceptable?
It can be, when the laboratory participates in proficiency testing and the parameters are non-critical. For safety parameters and high-value contracts, independent accredited verification is the stronger position.

Sampling is the largest source of error in feed-ingredient testing; a valid result requires many small increments combined into a representative composite, taken to a written plan.
Independent verification means testing the delivered lot at an accredited third-party laboratory using the contractual reference methods, on a properly drawn and retained sample.
Traceability is the documented ability to follow a material one step back and one step forward through the chain, and it is what makes a targeted recall possible instead of a total one.
