Extrusion versus pelleting for aqua feed: choosing the process before the supplier
Pelleting suits sinking feeds with moderate fat inclusion and lower water-stability demands, at lower capital and energy cost per tonne. Extrusion is required when you need controlled buoyancy (floating or slow-sinking), high water stability, high starch gelatinisation, high fat inclusion through post-extrusion coating, or precise density and sinking-rate control — typically for tilapia, catfish, salmonids, marine species and shrimp feeds. Extrusion costs more per tonne in energy and drying, and adds a dryer, cooler and coating system to the scope. Decide the process route from species, feed form, water stability and fat target first; only then request quotations.
The extrusion-or-pelleting decision determines the entire plant scope, energy profile and capital requirement. Making it after supplier contact usually means it gets made by whoever quotes first.

What changes in plant scope
- Extrusion adds preconditioner, extruder, die and knife system, dryer, post-extrusion cooler and coater
- Drying is a major energy consumer and often the real capacity bottleneck
- Grinding must be finer for extrusion, which affects the grinding line specification
- Vacuum coating equipment is required for high oil inclusion
- Extruded lines require tighter moisture and density control instrumentation

- Species, life stage and feed form per product
- Required buoyancy: floating, slow sinking or sinking
- Pellet diameters and length, and share of volume per size
- Target fat inclusion and how much is applied after extrusion
- Water stability requirement and the test method used to verify it
- Capacity per product, since throughput differs sharply by diameter and density
- Dryer fuel source and available utilities
