Extrusion versus pelleting for aqua feed: choosing the process before the supplier
Short answer
Pelleting suits sinking feeds with moderate fat inclusion and lower water-stability demands, at lower capital and energy cost per tonne. Extrusion is required when you need controlled buoyancy (floating or slow-sinking), high water stability, high starch gelatinisation, high fat inclusion through post-extrusion coating, or precise density and sinking-rate control — typically for tilapia, catfish, salmonids, marine species and shrimp feeds. Extrusion costs more per tonne in energy and drying, and adds a dryer, cooler and coating system to the scope. Decide the process route from species, feed form, water stability and fat target first; only then request quotations.

Can one line make both extruded and pelleted feed?
Plants are often designed with a shared grinding, dosing and mixing section feeding both a pellet press line and an extrusion line. That is a scope decision to be taken before quotation, because it affects intake capacity, buffer bins and the layout of the whole plant.
Why is dryer capacity so important in extruded aquafeed?
Extruded product leaves the extruder with high moisture that must be removed to a stable level. Dryer throughput, and its performance in local ambient conditions, frequently limits the sustainable line rate more than the extruder itself.
