Total ash versus acid-insoluble ash
Total ash tells you how much mineral is present. Acid-insoluble ash tells you how much of it is sand, soil or silica — material with no nutritional value that occupies formulation space and abrades processing equipment. For imported meals, acid-insoluble ash is often the more informative specification.
Ash as a dilution signal
In marine and animal proteins, rising ash usually means rising bone and falling digestible protein. In plant meals, rising ash usually means soil carry-over from harvesting or storage. Neither is an automatic rejection, but both change the true value of the cargo.
常见行业参考值
| Soybean meal | 6–7.5% | Higher values suggest soil or hull contamination |
| Fish meal | 14–20% | Bone content drives the value |
| Meat and bone meal | 28–38% | Specified alongside calcium and phosphorus |
| Acid-insoluble ash | < 2–2.5% | Sand and silica indicator |
Indicative industry reference values for orientation only — always contract against the delivered lot.
应核实事项
- —Both total ash and acid-insoluble ash on the certificate of analysis
- —Calcium and phosphorus where ash exceeds typical plant-protein levels
- —Consistency across shipments from the same origin and process route
常见风险
- —Hidden dilution with inorganic material
- —Abrasive wear in hammer mills and pellet dies
- —Mineral balance disruption in tightly formulated diets
常见错误
- —Specifying total ash only
- —Assuming a high-ash marine protein is automatically poor quality without checking bone-to-protein ratio
常见问题
Does high ash always mean adulteration?
No. Ash is intrinsic to marine and rendered proteins. Adulteration is indicated when ash rises without a corresponding, explainable change in calcium, phosphorus or process route — and especially when acid-insoluble ash rises.

Crude protein is nitrogen content multiplied by a conversion factor (usually 6.25); it estimates total protein but says nothing about amino-acid quality or digestibility.
Purity covers everything that should not be in the cargo — foreign matter, other-grain admixture, hulls, soil, packaging debris and deliberate adulterants — and is verified by physical inspection plus targeted analysis.
Heavy metals — lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury — accumulate in animal tissues and are regulated in feed materials, with mineral sources and marine ingredients carrying the highest inherent risk.
