The packing list and why it matters at receipt

Content that receiving needs

Package count and type, net and gross weight per package and in total, marks and numbers, lot or batch identification per package group, and container or vehicle references with seal numbers where applicable.

The traceability role

Where a consignment contains several production lots, the packing list is usually the only document that shows which lot is in which packages. Without it, an analytical result cannot be attached to a specific portion of the cargo.

At the point of receipt

Count and weigh against the list before signing. Discrepancies noted on the delivery document at receipt are recoverable; the same discrepancies raised days later usually are not.
