What FAT is and isn't
FAT is a witnessed test at the supplier's factory before shipment. It verifies that assembled equipment meets specification: dimensions, motor currents, control response, integration between subsystems. It is NOT a substitute for site acceptance test (SAT) — some issues (climate, biosecurity, integration with site) can only be tested on installation.
Test protocol scope
For a hatchery setter: run 24-hour temperature/humidity/CO₂ stability at each setpoint, verify alarm response, test cooling failure recovery, verify data logging. For a ventilation controller: run each mode with simulated sensor inputs, verify alarm outputs, test communication protocols. For feed lines: 4-hour run at full load, motor amp draw, spillage measurement.
Pass/fail criteria — written in advance
Pass/fail criteria must be in the purchase order, not agreed at FAT itself. Example: setter temperature stability ± 0.15°C over 24 hours at 37.5°C setpoint. If criteria only appear at test time, both sides argue about them and the process breaks down.
Deviations and non-conformances
Categorise each finding: (A) critical — must be fixed before ship, (B) major — must be fixed before commissioning, (C) minor — punch-list, fix at SAT. Written FAT report signed by buyer and supplier. Retention (5–10% of contract) held against outstanding items.
Video FAT vs on-site
Post-2020, video FAT (Teams/Zoom with cameras at test benches) became normal for smaller scope and known suppliers. On-site FAT still standard for $500k+ scope, unknown suppliers, or first-of-kind equipment. Independent third-party FAT witness (SGS, Bureau Veritas, TÜV) costs $3–8k and pays back on any real deviation.
