What the number actually represents
Kjeldahl and Dumas both measure nitrogen, then assume protein is 16% nitrogen. Non-protein nitrogen — urea, ammonium salts, adulterants — is counted as protein. That is why crude protein alone is never a sufficient acceptance criterion for a protein meal.
As-fed versus dry-matter basis
A 46% CP meal at 12% moisture and a 46% CP meal at 10% moisture are not the same purchase. Always confirm whether the contract basis is as-fed or dry matter, and state the moisture reference in the specification so protein is comparable between origins.
Why formulators look past crude protein
Least-cost formulation works on digestible amino acids, not crude protein. Two meals with identical CP can differ by several percentage points in digestible lysine after heat damage. Pair CP with reactive lysine, KOH solubility or urease activity where the process risk exists.
一般的な参考値
| Soybean meal | 44–48% CP | Dehulled grades sit at the upper end |
| Sunflower meal | 28–38% CP | Driven by dehulling degree |
| Fish meal | 60–72% CP | Species and pressing route dependent |
| Corn / maize | 7–9% CP | Energy ingredient, not a protein source |
Indicative industry reference values for orientation only — always contract against the delivered lot.

- —Method stated on the certificate of analysis (Kjeldahl or Dumas) and the nitrogen factor used
- —Moisture basis for the declared protein value
- —Protein tolerance and price-adjustment clause in the contract
- —Independent verification on a representative composite sample at discharge
主なリスク
- —Non-protein nitrogen adulteration inflating apparent protein
- —Heat damage reducing digestible lysine while crude protein stays unchanged
- —Protein declared on a different moisture basis than the contract assumes
よくある誤り
- —Buying on crude protein alone without an amino-acid or digestibility clause
- —Ignoring the sampling plan behind the certificate of analysis
- —Accepting a protein claim without a defined analytical tolerance
よくある質問
Is a higher crude protein always better?
No. Higher crude protein raises cost and can raise fibre or anti-nutritional load depending on the process route. Value comes from digestible amino acids per unit of cost, not from the crude protein headline.
How much analytical variation is normal?
Laboratory reproducibility for crude protein is typically around ±0.5 to ±1.0 percentage points between labs. Contracts usually define a tolerance band and an umpire laboratory for disputes.

The amino-acid profile — and above all digestible lysine, methionine, threonine and tryptophan — is what protein ingredients are actually bought for in modern formulation.
Moisture is water content expressed as a percentage; it dilutes every other nutrient, drives mould and mycotoxin risk in storage, and is the single most disputed parameter in bulk feed trade.
Digestibility expresses the proportion of a nutrient the animal can actually absorb; it converts an analytical composition into a nutritional value.
A certificate of analysis is a lot-specific record of tested parameters, methods and results; a generic or typical-values sheet is a marketing document, not a certificate.
