Supplier selection
How to choose a feed mill equipment supplier
Evaluate equipment suppliers against your defined plant, not against each other's brochures. Check that they have delivered your capacity range and your feed types, that their guaranteed throughput is stated on your recipe, that the automation level matches what you will actually operate, and that installation, commissioning, training, spare parts, warranty and service response are priced as visible line items. Then compare scope-adjusted CAPEX per expected tonne per hour together with energy per tonne and wear-part cost. A supplier that fits a 5 t/h poultry mash line is not automatically the right supplier for a 30 t/h multi-species pelleting plant.
Equipment suppliers differ far more in fit than in quality. The question is not who is best in general, but who is right for your capacity, your feed forms, your raw materials, your operating skill level and your country's service reality.
Request qualified equipment proposalsTechnical fit
- Delivered plants in your capacity band, not just the catalogue range
- Experience with your feed forms: mash, pellet, crumble, extruded, floating or sinking
- Experience with your raw materials, especially fibrous or high-fat formulations
- Guaranteed throughput stated on your recipe and pellet diameter, in writing
- Energy consumption per tonne for the quoted configuration
Scope and execution
- Which parts of the plant they supply themselves and which they buy in
- Steel, electrical, civil and building interface responsibilities
- Installation and supervision model, and expected local labour input
- Commissioning scope, performance test conditions and acceptance criteria
- Documentation package and as-built deliverables
Automation
- Recipe management depth versus what your team will operate day to day
- Traceability and reporting scope
- Licence and source-code ownership, and cost of future modifications
- Remote support capability and its cost after warranty
Aftermarket and lifecycle
- Local service presence or the realistic travel time to your site
- Spare-part availability, lead time and price list for wear parts
- Wear-part consumption per tonne: dies, rolls, screens, hammers
- Warranty duration, coverage and what voids it
- Total cost over the operating life, not the CAPEX alone
Questions to put in writing
- Which throughput figure is guaranteed, and on which written recipe?
- What is excluded from this price? Provide the exclusions list.
- What is the expected kWh per tonne for this configuration?
- What are the wear-part consumption and cost per tonne?
- Where is the nearest service engineer and what is the response commitment?
- What does the performance test measure, who witnesses it, and what happens if it fails?
Signals that deserve a second look
None of these mean a supplier is unsuitable. They mean the proposal needs clarification before it is comparable.
- Throughput quoted without any recipe basis
- No written exclusions list on request
- Automation described by brand names rather than by function and reporting scope
- Spare parts and commissioning wear parts absent from the price breakdown
- Performance guarantee referenced but no test procedure attached
