Supplier selection

How to choose an animal feed supplier

Short answer

Qualify a finished-feed supplier on specification consistency and delivery reliability, then compare on landed cost per tonne at one specification and one Incoterm. Ask for the guaranteed analysis with tolerances, the test methods that bind in a dispute, certificates of analysis per shipment, the certification of the producing mill, packaging and shelf life on arrival, and documented delivery performance. Price differences between suppliers frequently disappear once freight, packaging, payment terms and specification differences are normalised — and a supplier who misses delivery windows costs more than a price gap on the invoice.

Buying finished feed across borders is a logistics and documentation decision as much as a nutritional one. The supplier who can repeat a specification and a delivery window is usually worth more than the lowest quote.

Questions to put in writing

  • Provide the guaranteed analysis with tolerances and the binding test method.
  • Which certification applies to the mill producing our feed?
  • What was your on-time delivery performance on comparable contracts?
  • Quote on our Incoterm and destination so offers are comparable.
  • What documentation accompanies each shipment?

Signals that deserve a second look

None of these mean a supplier is unsuitable. They mean the proposal needs clarification before it is comparable.

  • Specification quoted without tolerances
  • Offers arriving on different Incoterms after a single stated request
  • No certificate of analysis process described
  • Delivery commitments given verbally but absent from the offer

Questions buyers ask

How do I compare bulk feed suppliers?
Convert all offers to one Incoterm and one destination, restate them on a single specification basis, add freight, insurance, port charges, inland transport and packaging, then compare landed cost per usable tonne alongside payment terms, MOQ, lead time and documented delivery performance.
Should I split volume between two suppliers?
Splitting volume protects continuity and preserves price tension, at the cost of higher administration and smaller shipment economics. It is common where a single supply failure would stop production.
