Puntos clave
- Authorisation is destination-specific: an additive legal in one market can be prohibited in another.
- Buy on documented activity units and stability under the mill's real processing conditions, not on product weight.
- Enzyme activity declarations use different unit systems between producers and are not directly comparable.
- Efficacy claims should be supported by peer-reviewed or independently designed trials in the target species.
- Mycotoxin binders differ fundamentally in binding spectrum; broad claims should be treated with caution.
En profundidad
What sits inside this category
Zootechnical additives (enzymes such as phytase, xylanase and protease; probiotics; gut flora stabilisers), technological additives (antioxidants, preservatives, mould inhibitors, pellet binders, anticaking agents, emulsifiers), sensory additives (flavours, colourants) and nutritional additives that overlap with vitamins, trace elements and amino acids. Mycotoxin-reducing agents form their own regulated group in several jurisdictions.
Regulatory status comes before commercial evaluation
Additives are authorised product by product, often by holder of authorisation, species, category and maximum inclusion. A generic version of an authorised additive is not automatically legal. Before evaluating price, confirm the exact registration or authorisation covering the destination market, the target species and the intended inclusion rate, and ensure the labelling matches those terms. Getting this wrong invalidates a shipment at customs and can put finished feed on the market illegally.
Activity units, thermostability and dosing
Enzyme activity is expressed in producer-defined units measured under producer-defined assay conditions, so two phytase products quoting the same unit number can deliver very different in-feed performance. What matters is activity recovered in finished feed after conditioning and pelleting at the mill's own temperatures. Ask for thermostability data at those temperatures, or use a coated or post-pelleting liquid application, and verify by assaying finished feed rather than the raw additive.
Evaluating efficacy claims honestly
A defensible additive decision rests on the mechanism of action, controlled trials in the target species under comparable conditions, and a measured response in the buyer's own operation. Dose-response data matters more than a single headline result. In-house validation should compare production runs with clearly defined performance indicators and a control period, since farm-level variation easily exceeds the size of the claimed effect.

Cómo comprar esta categoría
- 1Define the technical problem the additive must solve and the measurable indicator of success.
- 2Confirm authorisation status for the destination market, target species and intended dose.
- 3Request activity or viable-count declarations with the assay method and the guarantee point.
- 4Obtain thermostability and stability data at the mill's actual conditioning and pelleting conditions.
- 5Review independent efficacy evidence with dose-response data in the target species.
- 6Run a controlled in-house validation and confirm activity by assaying finished feed.
Qué verificar
- Authorisation or registration number valid for the destination, species and inclusion rate.
- Declared activity or viable count with assay method, guarantee point and expiry date.
- Stability data covering the mill's conditioning temperature and retention time.
- Label declaration consistent with the authorisation terms and with the certificate of analysis.
- Finished-feed verification confirming the additive is present and active at target level.
Riesgos típicos
- Using a product not authorised at the destination and losing the cargo or the finished feed batch.
- Enzyme activity destroyed during pelleting, producing no benefit despite correct dosing.
- Probiotic viability loss during transport and storage in hot climates.
- Overstated efficacy claims that do not reproduce under commercial conditions.
- Interactions between additives — for example acids reducing probiotic viability in the same premix.
Errores frecuentes
- Comparing enzyme products on unit numbers from different assay systems.
- Assuming a mycotoxin binder is effective against every toxin class.
- Skipping finished-feed verification after switching to a lower-cost equivalent product.
- Adding several additives with overlapping mechanisms without measuring the combined effect.
Términos clave
- Zootechnical additive
- An additive intended to favourably affect animal performance or the environment, such as an enzyme or probiotic.
- Thermostability
- An additive's ability to retain activity through conditioning and pelleting temperatures.
- Matrix value
- The nutrient contribution credited in formulation when an enzyme releases bound nutrients.
Preguntas frecuentes
How do I compare two phytase products fairly?
Not by their unit numbers, which come from different assay systems. Compare the phosphorus release matrix each producer supports, the thermostability at your pelleting conditions and the activity recovered in your own finished feed — then convert to cost per unit of released phosphorus.
Do mycotoxin binders work against all mycotoxins?
No. Clay-based adsorbents bind aflatoxins well, but binding of trichothecenes such as DON is limited, and biotransformation agents work through enzymatic degradation on specific toxin classes. Match the product to the toxins actually present and require evidence for those specific toxins.
What proves an additive is legal to use in my market?
A current authorisation or registration covering the exact product, species, category and inclusion rate at the destination, matching labelling and a supplier declaration. Confirm it against the destination authority's own register rather than relying on the supplier's brochure.
Should additives be added before or after pelleting?
Heat-sensitive products — many enzymes, probiotics and some vitamins — perform better applied post-pelleting as a liquid or in a coated thermostable form. That requires post-pelleting application equipment, which is a mill investment decision to weigh against the value of the recovered activity.
