Shelf life is conditional on storage
A twelve-month shelf life declared at 25 °C and 60% relative humidity means little in a 40 °C tropical warehouse. Match the declared conditions to the actual destination, or shorten the working assumption accordingly.
Remaining shelf life at delivery is the number that matters
Production date, not delivery date, starts the clock. Long ocean voyages and port congestion can consume a large share of a premix's usable life before it reaches the mill. Specify minimum remaining shelf life on arrival.
Valores industriais de referência
| Oilseed meals | 3–6 months | Moisture and temperature dependent |
| Vitamin premixes | 6–12 months | Shorter with choline chloride or trace minerals present |
| Fish meal (antioxidant treated) | 6–12 months | |
| Synthetic amino acids | 24 months+ | Stable when dry and sealed |
Indicative industry reference values for orientation only — always contract against the delivered lot.
O que verificar
- —Production date and minimum remaining shelf life on arrival
- —Declared storage conditions behind the shelf-life claim
- —Vitamin overage where degradation is expected
- —First-expiry-first-out discipline at the receiving warehouse
Riscos típicos
- —Vitamin potency loss below the label claim
- —Caking and flow failures in micro-ingredient dosing
- —Stock written off after a delayed shipment
Erros comuns
- —Contracting shelf life from delivery rather than production
- —Ignoring destination climate when accepting a shelf-life claim
Perguntas frequentes
How much remaining shelf life should be specified?
Enough to cover inland transit, storage and full consumption with margin — commonly at least two-thirds of total shelf life remaining on arrival for premixes and vitamins.

Oxidation degrades fats and fat-soluble vitamins, and is tracked through peroxide value, anisidine value, TOTOX and free fatty acids — a set that must be read together, not individually.
Moisture is water content expressed as a percentage; it dilutes every other nutrient, drives mould and mycotoxin risk in storage, and is the single most disputed parameter in bulk feed trade.
Storage history — how long, at what temperature and humidity, in what structure, alongside what else — explains most of the gap between a production certificate and the quality actually delivered.
Packaging is a technical specification: material, weight, liner, sealing, palletisation and marking determine whether the product arrives at specification and can be traced and handled safely.
