Extraction route determines residual oil
Solvent extraction leaves very little oil; mechanical pressing leaves considerably more. The two are different products commercially even when crude protein looks similar, and they behave differently in pelleting, storage and shelf life.
Fat is an energy claim and a stability liability
Residual oil raises metabolisable energy but also introduces oxidation risk. High-fat meals and marine ingredients should carry an antioxidant declaration, and their oxidation indices should be verified at origin and again if the cargo has been stored.
Valores industriais de referência
| Solvent-extracted meals | 0.5–2.5% | Residual oil after extraction |
| Expeller / cold-pressed meals | 5–12% | Higher energy, shorter shelf life |
| Full-fat soybean | 17–20% | Requires urease control |
| Fish meal | 6–12% | Antioxidant treatment normally required |

O que verificar
- —Extraction route stated on the specification
- —Antioxidant type, dose and treatment date for high-fat and marine ingredients
- —Peroxide value, anisidine value and free fatty acids at the point of transfer of risk
Riscos típicos
- —Rancidity and palatability loss
- —Energy value drifting from the formulation matrix
- —Self-heating in bulk storage
Erros comuns
- —Comparing expeller and solvent-extracted meals on protein alone
- —Buying high-fat marine ingredients without an oxidation panel
Perguntas frequentes
Why do expeller meals often carry a premium?
They deliver higher energy and are accepted in some non-solvent or organic supply chains. That premium is only justified when the oil is fresh and adequately protected against oxidation.

Oxidation degrades fats and fat-soluble vitamins, and is tracked through peroxide value, anisidine value, TOTOX and free fatty acids — a set that must be read together, not individually.
Energy values are calculated or measured estimates of the usable energy an ingredient delivers to a specific species; they are matrix values, not analytical certificates.
Verifying remaining shelf life at intake — production date, storage history and stability indicators — prevents paying full price for material that has already spent most of its usable life in transit.
