Poultry feed buyer questions

What should a poultry feed RFQ specify?

Bird type and genetic line, production phase, head count and monthly tonnage, metabolisable energy and digestible amino acid targets, presentation (crumble, pellet diameter, mash), pellet durability index, coccidiostat or medication status, mycotoxin limits, packaging and delivery destination. Broiler programmes should be quoted phase by phase — starter, grower and finisher price differently because amino acid and energy density differ.

How is broiler feed priced compared with layer feed?

Broiler feed usually prices higher per tonne because it carries more digestible amino acids, higher metabolisable energy, added fat and often a coccidiostat. Layer feed is heavier in calcium sources and cheaper per tonne, but consumption per bird runs much longer, so evaluate offers on cost per bird placed or cost per dozen eggs rather than on price per tonne alone.

What pellet quality should I require from a poultry feed supplier?

State a pellet durability index (commonly PDI 90% or higher for broiler grower and finisher), pellet diameter by phase, maximum fines at delivery, and how fines are measured on arrival. Poor pellet quality shows up as feed intake loss and wasted freight, so make PDI and fines a contractual acceptance criterion rather than a preference in the enquiry.

Can suppliers quote poultry feed without a coccidiostat?

Yes. Non-medicated, antibiotic-free and organic poultry programmes are widely produced, but the permitted additives depend on the destination market's regulations. State whether you need medicated, non-medicated or certified antibiotic-free feed in the RFQ, along with any required label claims, so suppliers quote compliant formulations from the start.

Add to a poultry feed RFQ

  • Bird type: broiler, layer, breeder, pullet, turkey or duck
  • Phase: pre-starter, starter, grower, finisher, pre-lay or layer phase 1/2
  • Presentation: crumble, 2–4 mm pellet or mash, and pellet durability index target
  • Energy and digestible amino acid targets (ME kcal/kg, dig. Lys, Met+Cys, Thr)
  • Coccidiostat / medication status and withdrawal requirements
  • Maximum mycotoxin limits and binder inclusion

Buyer questions, answered

How do I find a bulk animal feed supplier?

Define species, production stage, feed type, monthly tonnage, packaging and delivery destination, then issue one structured RFQ to several qualified manufacturers rather than contacting them one by one. FeedMatch runs that comparison for commercial buyers: we match your specification against manufacturers with the right capacity, certifications and export routing, and return offers benchmarked on specification and delivered cost.

Can animal feed be custom formulated for my farm?

Yes. Custom formulation starts from your species, age or production stage, performance objective, locally available raw materials, nutrient targets and target cost per tonne. Suppliers can quote a like-for-like match to your current label plus a least-cost alternative built on ingredients available in your region. Existing formulations, feeding programmes and recent raw-material analyses all speed this up.

What information is needed to formulate feed?

Species and breed, age or production stage, target performance, current ration or label if one exists, available local raw materials, ingredients to avoid, required additives or medication status, energy and protein targets, pellet or mash presentation, climate, and target cost per tonne. Local feed regulations for the destination market also determine which additives and claims are permitted.

What affects the price of commercial animal feed?

Protein and energy level, ingredient mix, raw-material market prices, additive and premix content, formulation complexity, pellet quality, packaging, order volume, freight and destination, and any certification requirements. Bulk deliveries generally price below bagged feed per tonne. Prices move with commodity markets, so offers are usually valid for a defined window.

Can FeedMatch source feed ingredients separately?

Yes. Feed mills and integrators often buy raw materials rather than finished feed. We source protein meals, energy grains, fats and oils, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, binders and complete premixes, quoted per tonne on the incoterm you specify, with certificate of analysis and certification requirements stated in the RFQ.

What minimum information is needed for a feed RFQ?

Country and delivery destination, species and production stage, feed or ingredient type, order volume and monthly requirement, packaging, required certifications and timeline. Nutritional targets, current formulation and target price make the offers far more comparable, but an RFQ can be opened and refined once suppliers respond.

Commercial order formats

  • Bulk tanker or tipper loads for on-farm silo delivery
  • Bagged 25 / 50 kg and 1 t big-bags, palletised and shrink-wrapped
  • Full container loads (FCL) for export markets
  • Recurring monthly or quarterly supply contracts with agreed price mechanics
  • Raw materials and premixes delivered to your own feed mill
  • Custom formulation and contract / private-label production

Minimum order quantities depend on supplier, product type, packaging and destination.

What affects commercial feed price

  • Crude protein and metabolisable energy targets
  • Ingredient mix and raw-material market prices
  • Additive, premix and amino acid inclusion
  • Formulation complexity and pellet quality requirements
  • Packaging format and palletisation
  • Order volume and recurring commitment
  • Freight, incoterm and destination
  • Certification and documentation requirements

Information suppliers need to quote

The more of this you provide, the faster and more comparable the offers. Anything you cannot answer yet can be left open — suppliers will quote against assumptions and flag them.

  • Country and delivery destination
  • Species and breed
  • Production stage (starter / grower / finisher / laying / lactation)
  • Feed or ingredient type
  • Current formulation or label, if available
  • Nutritional targets (protein, energy, amino acids)
  • Desired ingredients and ingredients to avoid
  • Order volume and monthly requirement
  • Packaging and presentation (pellet, crumble, mash)
  • Target price per tonne, if you have one
  • Certifications required (GMP+, ISO, HACCP, halal, organic)
  • Timeline and first shipment date

FAQ

What is the difference between pre-lay, phase 1 and phase 2 layer feed?

Pre-lay feed (about 16–17% CP, 2.0–2.5% calcium) prepares pullets for onset of lay. Phase 1 peak-production feed carries the highest amino-acid density and 3.8–4.2% calcium to support peak egg mass. Phase 2 late-lay feed lowers protein slightly and raises coarse calcium to protect shell quality as hens age.

What affects the price of layer feed per tonne?

Maize and soybean meal market prices, protein and energy level, calcium and phosphate source, added pigments, enzymes and vitamins, mash versus crumble presentation, packaging, tonnes per delivery and freight to your farm. Bulk tanker delivery normally prices below bagged feed per tonne.

Mash or crumble for laying hens?

Mash with controlled particle size is the most common commercial choice because it supports steady intake and lets hens select coarse calcium. Crumble is used where feeder wastage or long transport causes separation. Both are quoted so you can compare cost per tonne against expected wastage.

How should layer feed be stored?

Store on pallets in dry, ventilated silos or bins, keep vitamin-rich feed under 3–4 weeks in hot climates, and rotate stock first-in first-out. Ask suppliers for a stated shelf life and to confirm mycotoxin binder inclusion where raw materials are locally sourced.

What do suppliers need to quote layer feed?

Bird numbers and age, current ration or label, phase programme, target egg weight, tonnes per month, mash or crumble, packaging, destination and delivery frequency, plus any certification the destination market requires.

Can I source organic or non-GMO layer feed?

Yes, where certified supply exists for the destination market; certification scope is confirmed by the supplier.

What is the minimum order?

Typically one full truck for bulk and one pallet for bagged; export moves are usually full container loads.

Are suppliers ranked by commission?

No. Ranking is based on match to your specification, certification, capacity and delivery ability.
