The complete animal feed procurement guide

Feed is 60–75% of live-cost in most animal protein operations. Buying it well is the highest-leverage lever a producer has. This guide is a supplier-neutral playbook: how to define scope, qualify suppliers, structure RFQs, negotiate incoterms, secure quality and finance the cargo — for compound feed, straight ingredients, additives and premixes.

  • Strategy first, price second
  • Supplier-neutral framework
  • Works for compound feed, ingredients, additives
  • Aligned with GMP+, FAMI-QS, ISO 22000

Step 1 — Define the buying unit

Buy at the level where competition is real: finished compound feed for small integrators, straight ingredients + premix for medium mills, and additives + micro-ingredients separately for full-scale operations. Mixing scopes hides real prices.

Step 2 — Nutritional specification, not brand

Write the RFQ around nutrient targets (CP, ME, dLys, Ca, aP, particle size, mycotoxin limits) and process constraints, not brand names. Neutral specs let 5+ suppliers price the same scope.

Step 3 — Supplier qualification

GMP+ FSA / FAMI-QS / ISO 22000 as baseline; last 12 months of CoA history; two reference buyers in your region; solvency check. Skip any of these three and quality events follow.

Step 4 — Incoterms & payment

For cross-border ingredients, CIF or CFR discharge port with LC at sight is the safe default. FOB pushes freight risk to you but unlocks freight optimization for repeat buyers. Never accept EXW without a forwarder you trust.

Step 5 — Quality gates on arrival

Sealed sampling at load and discharge, third-party lab (Eurofins, SGS, Bureau Veritas), tolerances written into the contract with price adjustment clauses. NIR-based rapid checks catch 80% of quality issues within an hour.

Step 6 — Finance the cargo

For large parcels, structured commodity finance and receivables discounting can reduce working-capital lockup by 30–60 days. FeedMatch's financing partners cover the animal nutrition supply chain end to end.

If you already have suppliers or equipment brands in mind, list them (comma-separated). We benchmark them against comparable qualified alternatives — vendor-neutral, no lock-in.

House size, climate zone, production target, equipment standards, Incoterms, warranty terms, or any must-have scope items. The more specific, the more comparable the quotes.

FAQ

Common questions
