Aquafeed FAQ: fish feed, fish health and Singapore's RIE2030

Answers for fish farms, aquafeed producers and feed buyers: what to put in a fish feed request, what a feed may and may not claim about fish health, and what Singapore's new RIE2030 aquaculture research funding does — and does not — mean for buying feed.

Last reviewed 28 Oct 2026 against the official sources listed below. General information, not legal or veterinary advice.

The short answer

Ask every aquafeed supplier for the same specification and evidence so offers compare like for like; buyers use FeedMatch free and feed purchases have no minimum. Health claims need trial evidence and a legal basis in your market, and medicated feed needs a veterinary prescription. Singapore's RIE2030 programme funds aquaculture research, including fish feed and fish health — it is not a tender, price change or supplier approval.

Buying fish feed

What should a fish feed request state so suppliers can quote it?
The species and life stage, pellet size, floating or sinking behaviour, the nutrient specification you need (for example crude protein and fat, with the analysis method), any limit on fish meal or fish oil and the alternatives you accept, the certificates you require, monthly or total volume, packaging, destination port or farm and delivery window. The more of this you state, the more offers arrive on the same basis.
Is there a minimum order to request aquafeed quotes through FeedMatch?
No. Buyers use FeedMatch free, and feed, ingredient, premix and additive purchases have no minimum. The US$250,000 minimum applies only to plant and equipment projects, such as a new aquafeed extrusion line.
How are aquafeed offers compared?
Every supplier is asked for the same points: species and life stage, nutrient specification and method, ingredient origin, digestibility, pellet size and water stability, feed-conversion and health evidence with the trial protocol, batch consistency, contaminant tests, certificates, minimum order, shelf life, and freight with a landed-cost breakdown. Offers then compare side by side. Figures are the supplier's, with the conditions they were measured under; FeedMatch does not supply or guarantee them.
Should I buy extruded or pressed fish feed?
It depends on the species, how the fish feed (surface or bottom), and the water stability and pellet behaviour you need, so it is a formulation decision for your nutritionist. State the behaviour you need (floating, slow-sinking or sinking) and let suppliers quote the process that achieves it. If you plan to produce aquafeed yourself, the extrusion guide explains the equipment side.

Feed and fish health

Can a supplier claim its feed prevents or cures fish disease?
In the European Union, Article 13(3) of Regulation (EC) No 767/2009 says the labelling or presentation of feed materials and compound feed must not claim that the feed will prevent, treat or cure a disease, except authorised coccidiostats and histomonostats; claims about nutritional imbalances without associated pathological symptoms are allowed. Other countries set their own rules, so a regulatory check is required for your destination. FeedMatch asks suppliers to state any health claim, the evidence behind it and its legal basis in your market.
What is medicated fish feed, and can FeedMatch source it?
The European Commission describes medicated feed as a mixture of feed and a veterinary medicinal product, intended to treat or control disease in farmed animals including aquaculture species, and it requires a veterinary prescription (EU rules: Regulation (EU) 2019/4). Veterinary medicines need dedicated review and licensing, so a medicated-feed request is held until the prescription and the destination country's authorisations are confirmed, before any supplier is contacted. FeedMatch gives no veterinary advice.
How should I judge immunostimulant, gut-health or other functional aquafeed additives?
Ask for the trial behind the claim: species, life stage, dose, duration, control group, farm or laboratory conditions, the endpoints measured (such as survival, growth and feed conversion) and who ran the trial. A product with commercial production records, one with farm-trial results only and one tested only in a laboratory are different levels of evidence, and FeedMatch lists them separately. FeedMatch does not test or verify efficacy.
Which feed-safety documents matter for fish health and food safety?
The Codex Code of Practice on Good Animal Feeding (CXC 54-2004) says all feed and feed ingredients should meet minimum safety standards, with undesirable substances kept low enough that food from the animals stays below the level of concern. In practice, ask for contaminant test results for the substances your destination regulates, with laboratory, method and date, plus batch traceability and the manufacturer's quality or safety system documents.
Does Singapore regulate imported fish feed?
Yes. The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) treats aquaculture feed as animal feed. Businesses importing feed for food-producing animals, such as fish, need SFA's Registration to Import Animal Feed and a Cargo Clearance Permit from Singapore Customs for each consignment; the registration does not allow making, processing or selling feed, which needs a separate licence. Feed sold in Singapore must be labelled in English with the manufacturer's name and address, ingredients, manufacture and expiry dates and a guaranteed analysis. Genetically modified crops must be on SFA's approved list, and feed containing insects has extra import conditions. FeedMatch is not the importer.

Singapore RIE2030 and aquaculture research

What did Singapore announce for aquaculture under RIE2030?
On 27 Oct 2026 the Singapore Food Agency said it has been allocated $138 million under RIE2030 for the Singapore Food R&D Programme. Its aquaculture domain covers better fry and fingerlings for tropical conditions, improving fish feed and fish health, and farming systems.
Does RIE2030 funding create a feed tender or change aquafeed prices?
No such effect is stated by SFA. The announcement is research funding; it is not a feed tender, purchase programme, price change or supply shortage, and it does not approve any supplier, feed or additive. FeedMatch is not a party to it.
When will RIE2030 aquaculture grant calls open?
SFA says details of the grant calls are due in 2027. Eligibility and timing will be set by SFA, so check SFA's own announcements rather than relying on third-party summaries.
Is fish feed part of the SFA and JAPFA aquaculture MOU?
Feed is not named. SFA and JAPFA signed an MOU on 27 Oct 2026 to explore an R&D partnership in tropical aquaculture, initially on aquatic health and disease management and on digital technologies such as AI-enabled disease monitoring, diagnostics, farm decision-making and traceability.
Can I buy feeds or additives that come out of Singapore's aquaculture research?
Only once they are commercially produced and offered. SFA notes that under the earlier RIE2025 programme its AquaPolis work included farm trials on vaccines and feed additives, and that many of those projects are still ongoing. Until a product has commercial production records it is research-stage, and FeedMatch lists such offers separately from commercially validated feed.
