Pontos principais
- Demurrage is a planning failure risk, not merely a commercial term.
- Inland evacuation capacity often limits discharge more than the berth does.
- Discharge sampling must be planned before the vessel arrives.
What drives discharge speed
Berth availability, grab or pneumatic capacity, weather stoppages, receiving warehouse capacity and truck or rail availability. Discharge stops when the inland side cannot absorb the material, regardless of port equipment.
Laytime and demurrage
The contract allows a defined laytime; time beyond it is charged as demurrage. Buyers should model realistic discharge duration from historical performance at that port rather than accepting a nominal figure.
Sampling during discharge
Discharge is the best opportunity for representative stream sampling. Arranging the surveyor, the sampling plan and the sealing procedure in advance is what makes the resulting result usable in a dispute.
O que verificar
- Historical discharge rates for the specific port and cargo type
- Inland evacuation and storage capacity confirmed before arrival
- Discharge sampling plan and surveyor appointed in advance
Riscos a gerir
- Demurrage from inland evacuation bottlenecks
- Weather stoppages on cargo sensitive to rain
- Sampling missed because arrangements were made too late
Erros comuns
- Accepting nominal discharge rates in laytime calculations
- Planning berth capacity without planning storage capacity
- Leaving surveyor appointment until the vessel has berthed
Perguntas frequentes
Can demurrage exposure be reduced contractually?
Partly, through realistic laytime, weather working provisions and clear notice-of-readiness terms. The larger lever is operational readiness on the buyer's side.
Why sample during discharge rather than after?
A moving stream is the most representative sampling point available, and it precedes commingling in storage.
