Fix the requirement first
Nutrient targets, tolerances, physical form, packaging, shelf-life expectation and the analytical methods that will decide acceptance. Requirements written after offers arrive tend to be shaped by what the market offered rather than what the operation needs.
Volume, timing and storage
Peak consumption, safety stock, storage capacity and the shelf life of the material set the maximum practical order size. Buying a larger lot for a better unit price is a false economy when storage conditions degrade the last third of it.
Plan the verification workload
Every incoming lot creates sampling, testing and documentation work. If the laboratory capacity or the receiving window cannot absorb it, the verification will be skipped in practice regardless of what the plan says.
