Total cost of ownership for feed ingredients

要点

Total cost of ownership is the full delivered-and-used cost of an ingredient — price, freight, duties, handling, testing, storage losses, quality deviations and formulation impact — expressed per unit of usable nutrient rather than per tonne of material.

主要ポイント

  • Compare offers only after normalising Incoterms, moisture basis and nutrient content.
  • A cheaper tonne with lower digestible nutrient content can be the more expensive purchase.
  • Include the cost of verification and the cost of failure in the comparison.

Normalise before you compare

Two offers are only comparable when they are converted to the same delivery point, the same moisture basis and the same nutrient reference. An FOB offer and a CIF offer are not the same commercial object, and a 46% protein meal at 12.5% moisture is not the same object as 46% at 10%.

The cost components buyers routinely omit

Sampling and laboratory work, port storage, demurrage exposure, shrinkage during transfer, reconditioning of caked material, and the reformulation cost when a nutrient lands outside specification. These appear in operations budgets rather than procurement budgets, which is why they escape the comparison.

Cost per delivered nutrient

For protein meals, the practical measure is cost per unit of digestible amino acid delivered into the formula. For energy sources, cost per megajoule of metabolisable energy. These metrics survive origin changes and currency moves in a way that price per tonne does not.

確認事項

  • All offers converted to the same Incoterm and delivery point
  • Moisture basis stated and applied to the nutrient comparison
  • Testing, handling and expected loss allowances included in the model

管理すべきリスク

  • Selecting on unit price and absorbing the difference in operations
  • Ignoring currency and payment-term cost in a multi-origin comparison
  • Underestimating demurrage exposure on a discharge-constrained route

よくある誤り

  • Comparing FOB and CIF offers side by side
  • Using declared crude protein rather than digestible nutrient content
  • Excluding the cost of the verification programme the purchase requires

用語

TCO
Total cost of ownership — all costs of acquiring, verifying, storing and using a material.
Shrinkage
Quantity loss between shipped weight and usable weight, from moisture change, dust, spillage or handling.

よくある質問

Is the lowest total cost always the right choice?

No. Supply reliability, documentation quality and specification consistency carry value that a single-period cost model does not capture. Total cost narrows the field; supply risk decides between the finalists.

How do you cost a quality deviation?

Estimate the reformulation cost to restore the nutrient target, plus any re-testing, plus the operational cost of holding the lot. Documented deviations from past lots make this an evidence-based number rather than a guess.
