Feed mill equipment in Nigeria — turnkey pelleting plants and catfish feed lines.
Nigerian poultry and catfish producers are building their own mills to escape volatile bagged-feed prices. FeedMatch is supplier-neutral: we scope the plant with you and put one written specification in front of manufacturers who actually build at that capacity and support it locally.
- 1–10 t/h pelleting
- Maize & soy intake and drying
- Floating catfish feed extrusion
- Generator-aware power design

Grain handling is the hidden cost
Buyers budget the pellet mill and underestimate intake, cleaning, drying and storage. Where maize arrives above 14% moisture, a mill without drying either buys expensive dry grain or loses product to mould. Price the intake line at the same time as the process line.
Power design decides operating cost
Ask every bidder for kWh per tonne at your recipe, not nameplate motor totals. That number sizes the generator, sets the diesel budget and often changes which pelleting configuration is actually cheapest to run in Naira terms.
Poultry pellets and catfish floating feed
Layer and broiler feed runs on a conventional grinding, mixing, conditioning and pelleting line. Floating catfish feed needs fine grinding, a preconditioner, an extruder, a dryer and an oil coater. A shared front end feeding two trains is usually the efficient structure when both markets are served.
Spare parts and local support
Die and roller wear, gearbox parts and electrical spares dominate downtime risk. Make in-country or regional service presence and a two-year spare-part list part of the tender comparison, not a post-award discussion.
Ingredient programme
Maize, soybean meal, fish meal, amino acids and premix are the recurring cost the mill exists to control. FeedMatch prices the ingredient programme through the same RFQ so operating economics are known before commissioning.
Short answer · reviewed August 2026
What does a feed mill in Nigeria need that an imported standard design does not cover?
Three local factors reshape the specification. Maize and soybean arrive at variable and often high moisture, so intake cleaning, drying and moisture testing belong in the base scope rather than as options. Grid supply is unreliable, so specific energy consumption per tonne decides generator sizing and soft-start strategy, and dual-fuel or hybrid backup is normal. And catfish producers need floating pellets, which a pellet mill cannot make — that requires an extrusion train, usually sharing the grinding and mixing front end.
Nigerian project reference points
| Metric | Value | Unit | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Farm-scale mill | 1–3 | t/h | Single poultry farm or cooperative |
| Commercial mill | 5–10 | t/h | Multi-farm or regional feed seller |
| Catfish extrusion line | 0.5–3 | t/h | Floating feed, 2–6 mm pellet |
| Maize intake moisture | 13–18 | % | Drying capacity sizing driver |
| Raw-material cover | 14–30 | days | Harvest seasonality and price swings |

Equipment list for Nigeria — what to put in the quotation request
Suppliers can only be compared when every offer answers the same specification points. These are the lines FeedMatch fixes before sending a Nigeria project to manufacturers.
| Equipment | Specify in the RFQ | Why it matters here |
|---|---|---|
| Maize intake and drying | Intake t/h, dryer capacity t/h and moisture removal from 18% to 13%, fuel type | Wet-season maize arrives above safe storage moisture in Nigeria |
| Hammer mill | Motor kW, screens 2–4 mm (poultry) and 0.8–1.2 mm (catfish), guaranteed t/h, aspiration | Grinding fineness drives both pellet quality and extruder throughput |
| Mixer | Batch size, mix time, CV < 5% certificate, liquid/oil addition | Homogeneity of premix and methionine at low inclusion rates |
| Conditioner + pellet mill | Steam boiler kg/h, retention time, die L/D, motor kW, guaranteed t/h and PDI | Steam quality is the most common gap in low-cost turnkey offers |
| Catfish extruder | Capacity t/h at 2–9 mm floating pellet, dryer outlet moisture 9–11%, oil coater | Floating catfish feed is the highest-margin local product |
| Power train | Total connected kW, generator sizing with 20% headroom, soft starters, surge protection | Grid instability makes generator sizing part of the equipment scope, not an afterthought |
| Storage | Silo or warehouse tonnage for 14–30 days, aeration, fumigation and pest plan | Humidity and aflatoxin risk in maize storage |
| Bagging line | Bags/hour at 25 kg, weigher accuracy, sewing head, spare parts kit | Nigerian distribution is almost entirely bagged |
